The followinging Chart comes from numerous studies of bowlers I have coached over the past few years. Bowlers of equal ability can vary over 30 pins per game if far from their sweet spot. Matching up is a much bigger part of todays game. Find your sweet spot using the chart below. Start at 10. For every mile per hour over 15 on first ball, go up 1 number. For every mile per hour below 15 on first ball, go down 1 number. For every 30 RPM's under 240 go up 1 number. For every rpm over 240 go down 1 number. We will also factor in ball roll, as losing tilt and rotation are needed for hook. Combine the sum degrees of Axis tilt, and Axis Rotation. For every 12 degrees above 60, go up 1 number. for every 12 degrees below 60, go down 1 number. Here is an example. Bowlers speed =17= +2. Bowlers RPM's= 400= -5. Bowlers Axis rotation = 60 degrees+ Axis tilt = 15 degrees = sum degrees of 75= +1. 10+2-5+1=8. Going to the chart, this bowler should match up well to slicker then average conditions.
20 ------ 20 ------------------------------------------
19 ------ 19 WILL BOWL WELL ON EXTREMELY DRY CONDITIONS AND DIRECT LINES
18 ------ 18 ------------------------------------------
17 ------ 17 WILL BOWL WELL ON DRY CONDITIONS, WORN SURFACES,
16 ------ 16 OUTSIDE LINES TO THE POCKET
15 ------ 15 ------------------------------------------
14 ------ 14 WILL BOWL WELL ON SLIGHTLY DRYER CONDITIONS,
13 ------ 13 WORN SURFACES, AND STRAIGHTER LINES TO THE POCKET
12 ------ 12 ------------------------------------------
11 ------ 11 WILL BOWL WELL ON AVERAGE CONDITIONS,
10 -------------------- 10 SURFACES, AND LINES TO THE POCKET
9 ------ 9
8 ------ 8 -------------------------------------------
7 ------ 7 WILL BOWL WELL ON SLIGHTLY SLICKER CONDITIONS,
6 ------ 6 BETTER SURFACES, AND SLIGHTLY INSIDE ANGLES
5 ------ 5 -------------------------------------------
4 ------ 4 WILL BOWL WELL ON SLICK CONDITIONS, LOW FRICTION SURFACES, 3 ------ 3 AND INSIDE ANGLES
2 ------ 2 -------------------------------------------- 1 ------ 1 WILL BOWL WELL ON EXTREMELY TIGHT CONDITIONS,
0 ------ 0 AND EXTREME INSIDE ANGLES
Summary if you are near or above 20, lane conditions will not likely help or hurt you. Your ball is not likely to roll until it reaches the ball tracks on the way back to you. If you are near or below 0, you may struggle to keep the ball on the right side of the headpin. In either case, see your coaching professional to get closer to the middle of the chart. This will keep you from getting stuck in the flat part of the pattern, and give you a much better chance for success.
